Jako doma

The organization Jako doma stands alongside women and trans people experiencing homelessness, who find themselves in or at risk of social distress. In its community center, there is the possibility to wash laundry, cook warm meals, lock away personal belongings, charge phones, etc. Beyond this background support, however, Jako doma offers counseling for difficult life situations and other forms of help.

We visited Jako doma in Prague's Florenc district, and our wish was for the women and trans people there to find safety and also to be able to free themselves from their often difficult situations and live as they need. Thanks to the Jindřich Chalupecký Award and financial support for the exhibition, we were able to donate a fresco. Sketching took place during full operation, and we quickly realized that the motif on the wall had to be the opposite of the otherwise vibrant, bubbling pot of emotions, situations, quarrels, and joys.

There were sincere exchanges over our drawings, and it was empowering to hear the opinions of those who truly own the space. The final mural emphasized the users' desire for a calm place and sought to evoke a light summer atmosphere. The gift was accepted, although not long after, the community center had to move, and the painting has since become history.
